Anyone afflicted by prolonged or temporary insomnia knows that getting a good night’s sleep is not just hard, it can be pretty much impossible. Equally maddening to an insomniac is how cavalier friends and colleagues can treat your condition. Don’t misunderstand me, most friends care enough to try and help, it’s simply that some of the remedies are borderline laughable. Some will recommend that by eating bran muffins each morning you can sleep more soundly. Others will suggest downing a half bottle of Scotch an hour before sleeping. Both proposals may mean well, however they are both utterly wrong, and while one can help digestion, the second one is downright dangerous. Now there definitely are some insomnia causing psychological afflictions that require prescription medicines and continuing cognitive treatment, but these cases aren’t the norm when it comes to an occasional sleepless night. Most cases of passing sleeplessness can be handled by making one or two little behavioral and environmental changes.
